Cladosporium spp. as a causative agent of white superficial onychomycosis.

چکیده
White superficial onychomycosis is less common than distal subungual onychomycosis and occurs when certain fungi invade the superficial layers of the nail plate directly. Later, the infection may move through the nail plate to infect the cornified layer of the nail bed and hyponychium. It can be recognized by the presence of welldelineated opaque “white islands” on the external nail plate, which coalesce and spread as the disease progresses. At this point, the nail becomes rough, soft and crumbly. Inflammation is usually minimal in patients with white superficial onychomycosis, because viable tissue is not involved. It occurs primarily in the toenails. The most common etiologic agent in white superficial onychomycosis is Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Also, several non-dermatophyte moulds, including Aspergillus terreus, Acremonium roseogrisum (later confirmed to be Acremonium potronii) and Fusarium oxysporum, have been implicated [1]. We aimed to detect the involvement of some non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi in onychomycosis and reports on a case of onychomycosis due to Cladosporium spp. Methods

Study of onychomycosis: prevailing fungi and pattern of infection.
A mycological study of onychomycosis was undertaken in 88 patients. The nails were judged to be infected by their clinical appearance. Direct microscopy of the nail clips in 20% KOH solution was positive in 72 (81.8%) and culture was positive in 43 (48.8%) cases. Out of the samples cultured, dermatophytes were grown in 26 cases (29.5%), non dermatophyte moulds in 12 (13.6%) and Candida spp. in ...
متن کاملGrowing Incidence of Non-Dermatophyte Onychomycosis in Tehran, Iran
BACKGROUND Non-dermatophyte onychomycosis (NDO) is caused by a wide range of mold fungi other than dermatophytes, and has been reported at various rates in different countries worldwide. Studies on the incidence of NDO in the community are essential for understanding its epidemiology and control, as well as for the appropriate treatment of these infections. OBJECTIVES In this study, the incid...

Background and Objectives: Onychomycosis, a fungal infection of nails occurs worldwide with dermatophytes as the most common causal agents, although yeasts and moulds are also involved. The diagnosis usually involves direct microscopy and culture to prove actual existence of onychomycosis. This present study aims to provide knowledge of the epidemiology and mycological characteristics of onycho...
متن کاملFIRST CASE REPORT OF WHITE SUPERFICIAL ONYCHOMYCOSIS DUE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM IN IRAN
This paper presents for the first time the isolation of Fusarium oxysporum from the toenails of a man from Tehran. The fungus was demonstrated in KOH mounts and was isolated repeatedly from his nail scrapings over a 2 month period. Published reviews on onychomycosis in Iran have not revealed any cases of white superficial onychomycosis due to Fusarium oxysporum to date
